Hi!
I'm sorry to say that I use the Swedish version so I am not 100% sure about what the help says in English. I searched for the two words "auto" and "fyll", which mean "auto" and "fill" in English. Then I found the headline "Fylla i celler automatiskt", which means "Fill cells automatically". Just remember that this is a translation frm English to Swedish and then back to English again, so maybe the headline is not the one I just mentioned.
However, I read the information there and I don't think it tells you more than you already know, so I will try to solve your problem instead:
I am not sure about what you are trying to do, but if the cell contain one letter only you can just set up a sorting list (Tools->Options->Spreadsheet->Sorting lists). There are already a few sorting lists defined, like "sunday, monday, tuesday" and so on, so just create a list like "a, b, c, d, e....". Then enter "a" in the first cell, fill like you described, and it will work. In this case all letters will be lower case, even if you enter upper case letters. I experimented a bit with this and I found that even if you add a "A, B, C..." list, the FIRST one is what counts, so if you enter a "B" to a cell, it will still be converted to a "b".
I also tried to enter "'A" and this was NOT converted to lower case, BUT then the list was not activated so filling only resulted in "A" in every cell.
If you try to enter something like "Blah blah a", you will NOT get "Blah blah b" in the next cell.
So if that sorting list doesn't work for your needs, I think there is no solution for your problem, except to write a macro or something...
Here's a workaround, however somewhat complicated, if you want to "fill" something that looks like "Text a" (this wont work on things like "Text a text". The letter must be located at the end):
1. Enter a word or sentence followed by "001" in A1, in this example "Text 001".
2. Fill down to A26. A26 now contains "Text 026".
3. Translate the following to English and enter it to B1:
=VÄNSTER(A1;LÄNGD(A1)-3)&TECKENKOD(TEXTNUM(HÖGER(A1;3))+96)
I'll TRY to translate it for you, note that I am not 100% sure about the correct names of those functions in English:
=LEFT(A1;LENGTH(A1)-3)&ASC(CHR(RIGHT(A1;3))+96)
Note that TECKENKOD and TEXTNUM are probably called something quite different, so I used ASC and CHR, which is the StarBASIC function names for the same thing. Maybe it help you just a little to find the correct names yourself.
4. Now fill B1 down to B26.
5. Select B1:B26, then Ctrl-C.
6. Select Paste Special, unselect "formulas", OK.
7. If it looks great, cut and paste to A1:A26.
A quicker way is probably to enter each cell manually in this case...

Greetings
Would some be so king as to tell me what the feature is called so that I can
search for help on it.
The feature I refer to is the one where you type 1 in A1; 2 in A2 and 3 in A3,
you select the three cells so that they are highlighted and then position the
mouse on the botton right corner of the last cell, click and hold while you
drag don to say 20 and it puts in the numbers 1-20.
Now thats not hard, but I can't get it to work with letters a b c etc
Help, guidance directions and answers would be greatly appreciated
TIA
Chad
