It's not proprietary, but it's hard to work with. That's why there are few
open source and free tools to do it.

I always thought that the PDF file format was proprietary in the sense 
that a PDF could not be edited except by Adobe's tools - and even that's 
not a pleasant experience. I would much rather make changes to the original.
