The behavior you describe might be
called inconvenient, but it is also expected. I have seen that sort of behavior in every version of every spreadsheet application I have used since late 1983.
Well *I* didn't expect it. But I don't normally use the text functions very much. Usually the only text on my sheets are just the row and column labels.
I suppose it was the step where I formatted the whole sheet as text. The part I didn't expect was after reformatting a cell to General that the formula result would force the format back to text and then that setting would be "sticky". It was like I never did the format to General in the first place.
Had me banging on the keyboard and calling my machine some really BAD names there for a while. I only know it does it in Excel because I got so frustrated I rebooted into Windows to try it there.
