So the default setting means that the extension of your files are .sxw
?? If that is the case, then everything should work ok. How about
try these things and reply to list with the outcomes :
1/ right click on a .sxw file and select the application to open as
OpenOffice. Then retry to reopen - does it still ask you for the
application.
2/ what is the error message that is displayed when the file does not
open - is there an error message?

If your default is something different, try creating a file in the
.sxw format (use save as when saving the file). Then try reopening and
advise if the error still remains.

Columns.
I'm assuming that you are altering the page style when you are
creating these columns (instead of inserting a frame and then changing
the number of columns). Similar questions to those above, if your
default extensions results in .sxw files then they should definitely
stay as setup (columns that is). If it is something else then
possibly there are some conversion errors. I've tried to replicate
the error using 1.9.95 but could not.

At the end of the day, the version of OOo that are using is fairly old
and it may some issues with what you are trying to do.

One solution may be to upgrade to a newer version.
