There is no real pointers that haven't already been stated.  If you
check out the auto text functionality (Ctrl + F3 will bring up all
existing auto texts). Expand the 'standard' folder and select 'formula
numbering'. You will see the short code of 'FN'.

This means that on a blank line you simply enter FN, the select F3.

You can also create index's of inserted formulas the same way you
create table of contents.  When inserting the index Instead of
selecting table of contents, select the type of 'table of objects'
then select OpenOffice.org Math from the list that appears.
