Tiger did seem to think I had a sudden urge to open all my .doc files in text edit, but that was quick fix.
Thanks

Hello,
I was just wondering if openoffice was compatible with Tiger. I am on that system and really need open office to open up some programs, but I'm not sure how to do it, nor if I need any other particular software. Can you please help me with these problems. Thank you.
Ferdinand
OpenOffice 1.1.4 is indeed compatible with Tiger. At least as far as I use it. The caveat is that I mostly use the word processor portion of OOo. Note that you must have the X11 windowing system installed in Tiger. The X11 windowing system should be in the installation disk or downloadable from Apple.
An alternative is to use NeoOffice/J which is a port of OOo to the Mac using Java and the Apple Quartz windowing system. NeoOffice/J is a little more Mac like and uses the Apple open and save dialogs and printing. NeoOffice/J does not need or use the X11 windowing system.
The document files between OOo and NeoOffice/J are the same so either program will work with the files generated. I use both programs interchangeably without any problems on both my eMac at work and G5 dualie at home. Panther at work and Tiger at home. The only hassle is that I work with documents on a samba server at work and the OOo file opening and saving dialogs make it a bit of a bother to traverse the file system to save a document to the desktop and then traverse the file system back to the correct place in the samba serve to save the next document. It is a small price to pay for such wonderful programs though.
