Here are some answers:
1. Yes, you can, but there may be some minor incompatibility.
2. Yes, as long as you save the files as Microsoft Word (.doc) files. You can set this as a default under options, or you can do this in the Save dialogue.
3. I don't know. I don't think it matters, because either way your teachers will be able to open your files, as long as you follow the directions on answer #2.
