[Integrating my previous answer]
Hi Dennis,

having similar problems I made a few tests ad hoc founding that:
1. Loading a .html file as such:
. Open your new spreadsheet
. position cursor in a cell, say A1
. choose Insert > External data, select your file, select the name of
the range (in the html file) to be copied, click insert:
your file will be copied in the spreadsheet, you'll see all values
perfectly alined as in the original (no formatting stuff around);
however, you'll not be able to operate on (appearing) single cells
as the range is copied as a number of rows.

BTW, contrary to what I thought, the translation to .txt doesn't yeald a
better result. In case you can download/save your original file as .txt:

2. Loading a .txt file
. Open your spreadsheet
. choose Insert > External data, select your file and, in the drop down
menu ('File type'), select Text CSV; when the dialog window appears,
tick the small circle beside 'fixed width' in the 'separator options':
a graduate scale appears above the contents of you file and you can
  manually set the column separator.

HTH
Regards,
       Ennio.
