This may be a general resources problem.
How much RAM do you have? What kind of CPU?
I do not know the system requirements for OOo (and can't find them on
the site right now), but maybe someone else can help out here.
If you are running Windows, call up the Task Manager (in 2000 or XP,
right-click your taskbar and select Task Manager) and check under
Processes how much memory OOo is eating up and under Performances how
your processor is doing. Impress may need quite some space and power,
like many programs that do some graphics handling. I know from my
machine (256 MB of RAM) that trying to export from Impress to Flash, or
to work with GIMP for that matter, inevitably triggers off a crash of
the program.
