I just tried this with 2 beta 1.9.95:
1. I created links in a writer document to a spreadsheet in the same
directory. I didn't try to alter the links in any way to make them
relative.
2 I then zippped the files and moved them to a completely different drive,
unzipping them to a new directory.
3 When the writer file was opened, the hyperlinks had changed to reflect
the new location.

I believe OOo shows an absolute path but automatically updates the links as described.

I have a flash drive and at home it loads as I: and at work it loads as F:. I have links in spreadsheets between spreadsheets, and they work fine.
