Yes you may. However, many people with Mac OSX prefer Neooffice/J.
It is available at www.neooffice.org. It is the same same office suite
that is based upon Java. It is more like the other parts of the OSX
than OOo.
You can also download OpenOffice.org (OOo) from www.openoffice.org
for your OS. However, be forewarned: to work properly, OOo requires X11
installed and operating . But, the choice is yours.
