I do not see the problem. I just created a new spreadsheet. I tried
>file >save as. Put in a filename and under the filename is a check box
that says save with password. Click in the box and you will be asked
for a password when you try and save the file.
Am I misunderstanding the question or is this something you have missed?

I wondered if that was the problem.
I agree that the passwords set by OpenOffice and the passwords set by MS
Office on spreadsheets are not compatible
Can I suggest everyone switching over to OpenOffice when version 3 comes
out.
