I can't figure out how to "turn off" the hyperlink and return to typing normal text.

Here are a few techniques:

o When pasting, use Edit | Paste Special... (or Ctrl+Shift+V) instead of normal Paste, and select "Unformatted text". That way, your URL arrives as plain text and the space (or whatever) that you type next will both terminate the hyperlink and stimulate Writer to recognise it - just as if you had typed the URL yourself.

o After pasting the URL normally, next type Ctrl+Shift+Space before you type the next character. This the same as Format | Default Formatting, and has the effect of terminating the URL and causing subsequent text to be treated normally.

o After the event, you can select the subsequent text that should not be part of the hyperlink and use Format | Default Formatting (or Ctrl+Shift+Space) to return it to normal text. (If you include the URL itself in this and cancel the hyperlink, you can get Writer to recognise it again by typing a space immediately after it and then deleting the space.)

I trust this helps.
