I'm using OpenOffice.org 1.1, copyright 2003 form Sun Microsystems, which I just bought from Staples. In the Spreadsheet area, I created my first project and saved it under "save as". After doing some more work on it, I tried to save it by clicking on the "SAVE" icon. An error message appered that said, "Could not create backup copy". I had to click on the OK button twice before the spreadsheet screen reappeared. I then tried to close the project by clicking on the " X " in the upper right corner but after being asked to "SAVE, DISCARD or CANCEL", I received the same error message. So I can't get out of the project unless I do a soft boot and I lose all my work that way.

Which OS? I will guess windows of some description. You have to give
yourself permission to save in the directory where your personal copy of
OOo is located. This could be under C:\Programs and Files
\OpenOffice.org1.1\user\backup. XP is similar.
That seems pretty unlikely to me. The backup directory under windows is
under C:/Documents and Settings/<username>/Application
Data/OpenOffice.org/user/backup. Each user has their own space and they
have write permission by default. You would have to explicitly deny
yourself permission to do so and if he doesn't know how to give it he
doesn't likely know how to take it away.
This is some transient error that happens with OOo from time to time. I
think I've experienced it myself but I won't swear to it.
Probably totally coincidentally, I sometimes get an error with Mozilla
or Thunderbird that is similar where it hangs trying to save to the Sent
folder when I'm trying to send e-mail. The only relevance here is that
it happens with equal frequency under both WinXP and Linux, so it must
be in the Gecko code somewhere. I suspect something similar here, but I
have no idea what it might be.
The bugger of it is, it's not reproducible in either case.
