I had the same issues and installed the 'Aqua' version (English) from
the OpenOffice site yesterday without problems. It opens .doc files
sent to me as well as .ods files I brought over from the PC version.
I can print the .doc files. Did not exercise it more yet.
I am on iMac running 10.5.5. Per the about: OpenOffice.org 3.0.0
OOO300m7 (Build:9354).

If you are looking for a diffrent Language you need to find the one
with your language designator such as OOo 3.0.0rc2 OSXIntel Install
