What I ultimately am attempting to do, is capture a style from a document someone else emailed to me and is not natively already on my computer, ...

As Mike Scott has already suggested, this is straightforward:
o In the document where you need to use the style, go to Format | Styles and Formatting.
o Press the New Style from Selection button and select Load Styles... .
o Tick the types of style you wish to import.
o Press From File... and browse to your received document.

... or a set of instructions where I can send a pure style to a third party.

The only way I can see to do this is to send either a document or template including the required style. The document could be otherwise empty, of course. Your third party would then incorporate the style as above. You could even put the instructions for importing the style in the document!

This [Mike Scott's reply] would be perfect, if only the style can be saved as a file by itself. All my searching has only yielded that I can save a template which includes a style, but not just the style by itself.

You can alternatively save styles in a document. An empty text document containing a style is little more than a saved style - what you are seeking.

I trust this helps.
