Is there some way to prepare documents and presentations which look
same across various platforms?
I suggested my students to use OpenOffice on Linux in order to avoid
proprietary fonts. But when we open files on MSwindows, they show
disturbed layout.

I use the Liberation fonts kindly donated to the OSS community by Red
Hat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_fonts
They were designed to have the same metrics as the main fonts used by
Microsoft.
I use this as the default font for my system and documents. They are
re-distributable so you can give them to Windows users, Mac users and
Linux users.
Caveat: I think there may be some shortcomings with regards to some of
less common languages.
