My understanding was that the confirmation had to be a reply *from the subscribed account* to be successful. If the confirmation action is going to a linked URL, or if a reply from an unsubscribed account is sufficient, the issue goes away, and somebody like Chuck could just use the indirect unsubscribe for the problem account.
