Absolutely, but Subversion will treat the document as a picture [or
any other binary file]. IOW, you will retain all prior versions of the
document, but won't be able to merge differences between two versions of

ODF files are plain text (xml) files simply zipped up.
The project aims to create a dynamic zip/unzip process as files are
checked in/out of subversion thereby enabling full version control of
the *contents* of the odf files - not just a blob.
