Under OpenOffice.org, it can not be done at this stage.

I have tried to set this up using at least 5 different methods of
configuration including classpaths (inside and out of OOo), java paths,
library locations etc, all to no avail.

As I mentioned, the issue is to do with a java class that is only 
available in the StarOffice package currently. Alternatively, try
the macro I mentioned (MailMergeTest.sxw).
