That depends on the mail application. Some will use the system file
associations for the various file types. Others require you to specify
what application to be used. Is OpenOffice already the default for
opening Microsoft Office documents? If not, here's how to change the
defaults:
Changing file associations
Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and
choose the desired application.
