I've tried to use the MS Word dictionary in OO but it gives me an error that
the file is invalid, yet it works fine in Word.

When I looked into the OO dictionary file format, it seems to have a LOT of
strange formatting/control characters. The Word one is only a long list of
words with nothing else.

I also tried to open the Word Dictionary (medical.dic)in OO and stepped
through it adding all the words to the dictionary. There is a limit to how
many words you can add to the personal dic. I only make it to the "D"s
before it tells me the dictionary is full.

I have a large medical dictionary I user with MS Word. I would like to use
it with Open Office 1.4. I've not been able to figure out how to get a
simple txt list of words into some kind of file that Open Office can use as
a dictionary file.

Hi again Chuck

I have tried twice to indicate links explaining how you can install your own specialist dictionaries in OOo, but I am sorry if they are obscure.

If you have a list of words in plain text (and I don't believe there is a limit to size - mine is about 5500 words):

Open it in OOo, check in File-Properties-Statistics how many words are in the file and put this number at the top of the file. Probably a good idea to sort the list. Then save it as "plain text" - NOT "text formatted"

Rename it to (say) US_medical.dic

Copy this file to ~OOo-install directory/share/dict/ooo/

In a text editor open the file in that directory: dictionary.lst
Add an entry DICT en US US_medical

Save, close OOo, including quickstarter, and restart Ooo. You should be able to use the new dictionary. Note, this should allow for the use of capitals or lower case, but will not cope with possessives (-'s) or plurals. If that feature were important then you would have to include an affix file and munch, etc, as I understand it. The new words will be offered as spelling options in your document.
