What happens if you do this from a terminal?
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice?
Here's the output from terminal:
.... (snip)
.... Failed to open device
[Java framework]sunjavaplugin.so could not load Java runtime library:
file:///usr/lib/../lib/gcj-4.1/libjvm.so.
~$
<snip>
Wouldn't it be possible to simply set a link to this jre in
/opt/openoffice.org3/program,
or somehow making the newly installed ooo3.0 aware of the existing sun jre ?
The installed OOo 3.0 will pick you the existing jre via
ools|Options|OpenOffice...|Java. However, your install location for 07
indicates to me that you did not install from Synaptic as: 1) jre for
feisty (7.04) is only at 02, and 2) system-wide jre should be located in
the /usr/lib/jvm
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=names&keywords=sun-java6-jre
If you want to install 07 or 10, you should put it in /usr/lib/jvm and
then use a simple gui tool to set the links:
sudo apt-get galternatives
then
kdesu galternatives
... but won't these 'install' commands destroy my current 2.2.0 version
and its jre1.6.0_07...
which right now are in perfect good shape?
The last one will only reinstall 02 as there is no 07 in 7.04. It won't
disturb your existing /user/local/jre1.6.0_07 but see above regarding
this jre install.
I ultimately decided to go for broke: to simply have synaptic install
jre1.6.0_02 in /usr/lib/jvm and see what would happen.
What happened was that since then OOo_3.0 starts and runs perfectly,
thus solving my problem. OOo_2.2 remained intact.
Thank you, NoOp, for your patient help and assistance.
