How do I turn off the dialogs that popup to help me format stuff?
I don't know of any such dialogues: you may have to explain what you
mean. I do know that OpenOffice brings up toolbars according to the
current context of the cursor, and that some people find these
troublesome. If that is your problem, I think there are two things
you can do:
o You can drag the floating toolbar and dock it into the toolbar area
at the top of the document window. The toolbar will continue to
appear or disappear according to context, but may not be so much of a
problem.
o Put the cursor somewhere that brings up the toolbar that you do not
want to see. Whilst it is displayed, go to View | Toolbars > and
click to remove the tick next to the relevant toolbar. Not only will
it disappear, but it will not return when the context would otherwise
generate it. (Thanks to the contributor to this list from whom I
learned this trick a few days ago; the web site currently declines to
tell me who this was.)
I trust this helps.

Thanks for the thanks, Brian, but I'm sure it was somebody else on the
list who told me this trick quite a while back! I think this list and
those for the other open source projects are one of the most significant
advantages over commercial programs.
