Aha! That's true - unlike the *copy* you suggested before. Mind you, if the questioner had merged cells in the source of her copy, she would probably want to keep them. The problem must be with merged cells that are neither in the source nor the target range, but elsewhere in relevant rows or columns. And any sort of duplication by staging won't help that problem.
