Apparently so.
o Go to Tools | Options.. | OpenOffice.org Writer | AutoCaption.
o Tick and select the relevant object type(s).
o Under "Caption order" select "Category first".
o Under Caption | Category, select the appropriate text.
o The important bit: under "Numbering captions by chapter", select 1
(or as appropriate).
You also need to set up chapter numbering at Tools | Outline
Numbering... | Numbering, of course.
