If you are going to use OOo, I would recommend you download version 1.1.4 for the present time. OOo 1.9.100 is still in the testing phase, and that is why it may have crashed on you. Version 2.0 is due out this summer, and 1.9.100 is a preview of what will be available later. Others on this mailing list may have more information of how to insert a sound into a Writer document and hopefully will reply to you on that part of your email.
