I just checked, but "Check for spelling as you type" IS checked. That
was the first place I looked before. However, I just now unchecked it, ,
then re checked it without restarting, and now it appears to work. My
default was always check as you type, so I don't know what is going on.

I have the same experience as both Harold and Mike do,
with OO 3.0.0 on Mac OSX 10.5.6 Intel.
With "Check for spelling as you type" off, I have to invoke
the spell menu from the Tools menu, Spelling and Grammar ....
But with "Check for spelling as you type" on, a right click
on a word with a wavy red line under it brings up alternative
spellings and other related spelling options.

Maybe it's me, or some setting I can't seem to find.
On the windows platform, right-clicking on a misspelled word brings up
suggestions. On the mac, however, although other items come up on right
click (like paragraph alignment, etc.), the spell options doesn't.
Command-clicking doesn't do it either. I have to invoke the spell menu
from the menu bar to bring it up. Has anyone else noticed this?
Mac 10.5, intel.
Perhaps you haven't set in Preferences, under "Language Settings",
"Writings Aids", "Check for spelling as you type"?
Or if you have that set, perhaps you need to install dictionaries?
Maybe this link will be more useful to you:

Otherwise... right-clicking misspelled words as you go works fine here
on 3.x - Running OOo 3.0.1 (RC2) Mac 10.4.11 PPC.
