I have that same problem. I was trying to download Open Office Aqua, but I can't get an English version of it. My computer will run the ones that are foreign, I just can't find where to change the language.

Whenever I start OO, it appears briefly and is then replaced by X11, which opens an xterm window. After a few seconds, I get an error message: "Command timed out." If I then select OO from my Dock, I get 3 menus: OpenOffice.org, File, and Edit. File shows only 1 option: "Use Startup Screen," which is grayed out. Edit shows Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear (all grayed out) and Edit Script. The mouse cursor, meanwhile, shows as a slowly rotating timer wheel. So I'm unable to use the program at all. It won't even quit properly -- I have to force quit it via Activity Monitor. I've set X11's preferences according to the instructions on page 5 in Howto_OOo_2.0_MacOSX_english.pdf.
