Mr. Suarez-Potts should have been kind enough to have provided you with the answer directly, and then refer you to this list for any further assistance... You can download and install 3.0.1 directly and still retain any earlier versions (1.x or 2.x) without any issues. In fact you can use a 1.x and/or 2.x version in parallel with 3.x on Windows and Linux machines. Older documents will work with 3.0.1. However, there were some issues with Impress presentations & bullets, so I'd recommend keeping your 2.x version and testing your documents in 3.0.1 first. After you are comfortable with 3.0.1, and satisfied that all of your documents are working, then go ahead and uninstall 2.x to save disk space.
