Is your table heading a real one - created by ticking Heading in the Insert Table dialogue - or just the first row of your table? I think this matters.

It was created months ago, and I can't recall. How does one tell?
If I switch on Repeat Heading, that row repeats at the top of each
new-page segment of table. The repeating heading disappears if I switch
off Repeat Heading in the Table > Properties. But I don't know if that's
definitive.

Yes, that's definitive. Your heading row is a repeating one. Should not matter unless you want the row itself to break across a page, which in this case you do not.

There are two settings that seem to affect this for me:
o Table | Table Properties... | Text Flow | Allow table to split across pages and columns. (Remove tick.) o Table | Table Properties... | Text Flow | Keep with next paragraph. (Tick box.)

I thought maybe - since every table extends at least two pages - that
"Allow table to split across pages and columns" was necessary.

Yes, it is necessary, but I think Brian has the two choices reversed. Allow table to split should be ticked, but Keep with next para should NOT be ticked. However, you have said,

Checking and unchecking it seems to have no effect on the existing table
and its surroundings.

...so that's unlikely to be the problem, or not the only problem.

Your problem (or part of it) is likely to be in the *paragraph styles* used in the table.

The following settings are in my experience necessary, but may not be sufficient to solve your problem.

Table Heading paragraph style: On Text Flow page, be sure "Keep with Next Paragraph" is ON (ticked) -- you said you had done that, but by itself it may not be sufficient.

Table Content paragraph style: "Keep with next paragraph" must be OFF (no tick).

Table | Table Properties... | Text Flow | "Break" must be OFF (not ticked).

Table | Table Properties... | Text Flow | "Allow table to split
across pages and columns" must be ON (ticked).

Table | Table Properties... | Text Flow | "Keep with next paragraph" must be OFF (no tick).

After you make the changes, I suggest saving the file, closing it, and reopening it. I have found that on many occasions, things won't reflow until after I close and reopen. If they still aren't working after that, then we need to go on to the next level of diagnosis. There are probably some other exotic settings that I've forgotten.

Further thoughts: was this document originally created with OOo2.x? I've seen some odd, inexplicable things happen with 2.x files edited in 3.0. Shouldn't happen, but...
