Change
the program that starts when you open a file
Many file types in Windows are registered to be opened by
a particular program. For example, Notepad starts when you want to open
a text document file type. You can change the program that starts when
you open a file.
- In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the View
menu, and then click Options.
- Click the File Types tab.
- In the Registered file types box, click the
file type you want to open with a different program.
- Click Edit.
- In the Actions box, click Open.
- Click Edit.
- In the Application used to perform action
box, type the path to the program you want to use to open files of the
selected file type. Or click Browse to select the path from a
folder list.
Note Not all registered file types have an Open
action.
The above comes directly from Office 200 Help
and is not specific to Office, but works for any program.
Also, you can try re-running your Office setup from CDs and selecting
"Repair errors in my Office installation".

I'm sure this is an easy question: When I installed OpenOffice.org, I
accidentally set it to be the default application for opening .doc files.
Since I share my computer with several kids, I'd like them to keep using
Word for their schoolwork. How do I change the default application for .doc
files back to Word?
Thanks,
Sarah Lemaire (a brand-new user, who will soon be editing a book using OOo)

Hello Sarah and welcome to OpenOffice.
First - Sarah, it is much better if you start your own thread as it
may be ignored by those that don't follow the thread. Many mail
programs will block out deleted threads if configured that way.
Second - I would suggest that you let you children use OpenOffice and
then export in *.doc format to take to school. It works like a charm
in most cases. Version 2.0 which will be out soon is even better.
I say this as I create all my documents in OOo and have for years and
then export them as *.doc when required. When the other person does
not have to edit the document, I export as a pdf file instead.
My wife does the same thing and in fact, the business she is working
for is moving to OpenOffice as they must now produce document in pdf
format.
I cannot help you to change the default as I don't use Windows.
