Hello Dave, File association is the solution, also on Mac. Select one of the files you want to edit in OOo. Cmd-i (or apple-i) and the file info opens. Fifth part of the window is Open with. There you choose OpenOffice.org and specify that you want to use it with all docs of this type. That should do the trick.
