I'll mention out that I have spent the best part of an hour trawling
through the help file trying to find the answer.
o Click on Custom Animation in the Tasks panel on the right.
o Select (some part of) the first relevant item.
o Under Modify Effect, click Add... .
o On the Entrance tab, select the required display mode.
o If appropriate, select a speed from the drop-down menu below.
o Click OK.
o Ensure that "On click" is selected in the Start drop-down menu for
the effect.
o Repeat for further items, in order.
