Hello
I used to have this problem of inserting columns through merged cells but
was
very pleased to find that there is now an extension that will let you do
this.
It is - CalcEasy Toolbar - Found in the Extensions -
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org
It will -
"1. Insert new toolbar which allow user add/remove columns or rows.
2. Allow user to perform mass vertical or horizontal merge easily for range
of cell"
