What operating system are you using?

Dave

What extensions do the files have? The extension is the part of the file's name *after* the last dot. So, for example, the extension of a file named "x.y.z.txt" is ".txt"? Typical extensions are ".doc" for Word documents, ".odf" for OpenOffice Writer documents, ".mp3" for MP3 music files. If your system is configured to not show extensions, do as follows:

  1. Open My Computer
  2. Click Tools at the top of the pane
  3. Click Folder Options
  4. Click View
  5. Ensure there is *not* a tick (check mark) in the box labelled
"Hide extensions for known file types"; if there is one, click
inside the box to remove it.
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK as many times as necessary

Now when you look at a list of files in a directory/folder you will see the extensions. These are key. When you double click a file it's the extension that Windows looks as to decide which program to run.
