Thanks, but I am familiar with unoconv. In fact, I suggested it to the
Okular devs as a quick way to get DOC support in Okular.

However, I have discovered this terrific extension and it has solved
this issue for me:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/pdfimport

This lets the user save a document as a valid PDF file with the
original ODT file embedded for editing. This is, in my opinion, the
perfect document format. The only thing missing from the extension is
better save support, as the user currently must be careful to export
(not save) as a Hybrid PDF file.
