You basically specify the data source you want OOo to use for your mail
merge operation. I have used this with a spread sheet. In your case, I
suppose it is going to be your address book from thunderbird.

Once you specify the data source, you just tell OOo to show you the data

I was doing most of that already! (The OO help is very good IMHO). However, it's not THAT intuitive, and is one reason I /might/ keep using MS Office. It seems in OO that it's quite simple to produce a single label, or a page of labels, but not that simple to produce (say) three labels all different, which is what I do mostly...
