I'm assuming that you have selected the appropriate drive in the dropdown menu from File > Save As, and that the slider on the floppy is set to allow writes.

What message, exactly, do you get when you try to save?

Is the option to automatically add file extensions selected? (It should be, though this really shouldn't matter to the success of the save.)

Do you get the same behavior with both the default format (.odt) and the Word format (.doc) when trying to save from Writer? Are you using Word 2007 and its default format (.docx) when you're using Word to write to the floppy? (It's possible, but not likely, that the odt format requires more space than the docx format. But odt files are much smaller than the corresponding doc files.)
