With 3.1 dev m8, I had the same problem but worse. I'd try to start up
Writer, it would crash and I'd be asked to recover the saved (never
started) document. This cycle would continue indefinitely. I'd have to
use task manager to shut it down, and the process would continue even
after a reboot. Win XP SP 3. I went back to 3.01 and it is very stable.
Also, I FINALLY learned to make all the right settings to have Writer
print envelopes correctly and consistently on my Brother MFC-7420
(multi-function machine). Until then, I'd had to use Word 2007 (or an
older WordPerfect) to print envelopes for my letters. It may not be as
hard to set up printing on an HP Inkjet, which would have a simpler
paper path for envelopes.
