Good thing you asked because numbering a style is not very intuitive. What you actually do is go to Tools->Outline Numbering and there fix what levels of headings get what kind of numbering. The above link also talk about it. I know it is not as intuitive as applying a style of a paragraph, but once you have done it once, it becomes quite easy.
