Yes. I do this frequently. My scanner can do this also.

Yes. There are none.

There's a "readiris.ini" file in C:\Windows. It says:

So no help there.

Nope. It's all managed via a combination of in-built lists and data in the 
Windows Registry.

".doc" files have been associated with swriter for years, ever since I 
discarded MS Office and started using OOo.

I *think* that the newest version of Readiris probably supports OpenOffice 
2.x, possibly 3.x. My current version supports 1.x but, of course, I don't 
have that installed so the OCR software utters an error message. In any 
case, its only support for OOo 1.x is via RTF which I can use without hassle 
in other ways.
