anyway, I click the drop down menu and select "English(USA)" and
Openoffice restarts. Spellcheck still doesn't work and Finish is still
set as the defualt language.

Hello Hagar!
There is a blue check infront of the language I want. I rebooted my
computer and I noticed that it started working once I selected the
language, until I restarted openoffice, in which case "Finish" was right
back as the language.
Isn't this a bug with OO? I never ever changed any OO settings before...
