As I look at the feature list for 3.1, particularly Charts, I'm reminded
of the most recent Microsoft thingie for which I wanted a non-Microsoft
replacement.

Planning and scheduling.
GANTT charts and resource-tracking/allocating charts with a scheduling
engine behind them.

Does that sound like a useful "next direction" for OOo development?

Or is the number of people who use OOo professionally too small to
support such an addition?

Alternatively, does anybody know of a substitute for MS Project?
Naturally, in this list I'm asking about a "free" version (as in source
code available), but "free-as-in-beer" would also be nice... just not an
absolute requirement.

If I recall correctly, at one time OOo didn't include a database
component either, but eventually it happened. So why not planning, too?

I tried OpenProj and it imports and displays MS Proj files, but it lacks
a really nifty feature. It displays resources as either blue (normal) or
red (critical), no other colors. In MS Proj, we produce huge GANTT
charts for groups of people working mutliple projects, so we color-code
each resource. That makes it MUCH easier to scan a schedule/chart and
pick out the places where I (for instance) am double-booked.

Still, they've got the start of a good engine. I wonder if something
like that could be brought under the OOo umbrella. I wonder if anybody
other than me would be pleased to see that happen.

Comments? Thoughts?
