It's tempting to do that, but if I do Update Manager will constantly
give me reminders that there are upgrades available.

More important, last time I did that was back in the days of Gutsy. The
version that came with Gutsy had a bug that caused drag and drop of
text not to work. It was an obscure bug that affected only a hundred
people worldwide, as far as I could tell. I installed the OOo version,
and the bug remained. And the OOo version had even more bugs that the
Ubuntuized version did not.

In your case there is good reason to switch. I rarely need to access
databases, so I have not been bitten by that particular bug.

Much is made on this list of how evil the distroized versions of OOo
are. There is an assumption that if you are experiencing a bug it must
be the fault of <insert distro name here>, because surely if you used
the official OOo version you would have no problems. But I'm here to
tell you that my experience is quite different. Sometimes the
distroized version does introduce bugs that are not in the OOo version.
But the opposite is equally true. And more important, unlike you, I
have yet to find that the OOo version fixes any bugs in the distroized
version.
