YES it would be great to have a version built in to Word, Writer, or whatever,
that had the range of a Webster unabridged dictionary/thesaurus/etc. software,
but who will volunteer to make it work for each localization (or just their
own)?

There is/was an OOo 1.1.5 macro that provided that functionality. What
it did was go out to websites that provide synonyms, and do the look up
for one.

Do you know that there is now over 200,000 words in the general English language and some references put it to over 500,000 words?

That is barely two percent of the number of words in the English
language, according to the editors of the Oxford English dictionary.

Now I'm wondering if I can integrate OED into OOo.

2%
well, English has added so many other-language words into
mainstream English, that it can be difficult to know anymore.
I just know what I have dealt with on the two projects I was
with.

The big trouble with going to the web is you cannot always
have you computer connected to the Web. I have 4 web based
dictionary options, but it does not help in someone else's office
or home.
