Thanks to all for the comments - the poster is going to be printed and
put on building walls anyway, so compatibility amongst other users is
not too much of an issue, except when the creator has asked me to
review the document.
For now I guess the easiest solution is to get them to save it as a
different format - who would have thought MS would be playing with
their formats!! ;-)
Cheers all,
David

I have tried searching the various sources of information but with
little success.
I am having trouble opening .docx documents that have been emailed
to me. These documents have consisted of a series of text boxes
with text inside them.
OOo3.1, and OOo3.0 before I upgraded, will open the document, but
it loses *all* the formatting. Instead it forces all the text to
the top of the page.
As an example, I have placed the original, and a PDF output of what
OOO3.1 does to it at http://www.davidpatrick.name/openoffice.
Can anyone either tell me, or point me in the right direction for a
solution to this problem?
Many Thanks,
David
If you need only to view these docs, I think getting them as PDFs
(as others have suggested) is your best option.
If you need to edit them, ask for them in .doc format. I used Word
2008 12.1.17 to convert the .docx you provided to .doc. Neither Word
2004 11.5.3 nor OO 3.1.0rc2 (PPC) rendered it exactly like Word
2008, but the OO problems aren't bad. (Even the .docx in Word 2008
needs a bit of fixing.)
BTW, I don't believe there's a "Word viewer" for Mac. I can't even
find the old PPT viewer anymore.
