As with any other similar program, when you select "SAVE AS", you
are offered a list of available file formats, among which are 
several MSWord formats. I have had satisfying results exchanging 
both Word and Excel documents for several years. If all of the documents
are originating with you, there's small chance you would ever encounter
a mismatch, provided you've chosen the format 
most closely aligned with the one the profs use. That might require
a small amount of trial and error, but is well worth it.
