When you installed OpenOffice.org you were asked whether you wanted Open
Document format of MS Office format as the default.

If you said Open Document format then a simple "Save" will save the document
in that format *regardless* of an ".xxx" you enter manually as part of the
name. To save in MS Word format you need to :
 go to File>Save As
choose the relevant MS Office version from the drop-down list of available
file types
tick/check the "automatic filename extension" box.
 click Save
Do *not* enter the ".doc" as part of the name you type.

If, on the other hand, you said MS Office format then a simple "Save" will
save the document in MS format *regardless* of an ".xxx" you enter manually.
To save in OpenOffice format you need to Save As, choose Open Office format
and tick/check the "automatic filename extension" box.

You should *never* enter the extension (".xxx") yourself. Saving the file by
entering ".doc" (or ."odt"as) the last part of its name is **not**
sufficient.
