I'm having similar problems.
I'm understanding that Arial Narrow, like Calibri and others, are Microsoft
proprietary fonts.
This is a traditional trick used by Microsoft against interoperability.
So: everybody should avoid them and also ask other people to do the same.

Please help. I tried to open a PDF document today, and it told me "it
could not read the arial narrow font". I thought open office had that
font? I checked the fonts, but it does not appear that I have it on mine.
Can I get this arial narrow font? If so, how?
Thanks,

When I looked at my reference sheets on MS loaded fonts, I find that
Arial and Arial Black are the only two that are installed with the
OS. I do not know is it is installed by MS Office or not.
Am I mistaken, but does using a font in your document that does
not reside on the readers system cause the system to try to find
a similar font to substitute in the reading of the text? Also,
in PDF docs, if you want the reader to get the correct font, I
always embed the font to the document. I use to use some heavy
stylized fonts in a newsletter and that was the only way to get
reader to see those fonts.
The "getting of a font" is easy, if you care to take time and
"look" for them. You could find a free font site or, in my case,
go to a font newsgroup and ask if someone where you can get it.
My personal font collection (windows) is over 100,000. I have
not gone through them for a few years, but to be honest, most
of the non-stylized fonts are "similar" to the standard ones.
I collected fonts for a project that I was involved in a few
years ago.
My advise about fonts is, embed them if you want them to appear
in your documents, otherwise, just use standard "styles" like:
Arial/Helvetica; Georgia/Georgia; Times New Roman/Times
{ Windows/Mac versions}. I do not know what default Linux fonts
may be, since it has been a while and I do not have a reference
sheet on what version have what fonts.
